Going on holiday is an exciting experience but sometimes we need a little downtime in between all the activities.
A rainy day makes for a perfect opportunity to stay inside at the Atlantic Retreat and create some special memories with your loved ones.
From building forts and crafts to cooking and playing games, here are just some ideas that will help you spend your day making your holiday one to remember.
1. DIY Indoor Treasure Hunt
Create a treasure hunt using items around the house. Write clues and hide them in various places, leading to a ‘treasure’ at the end. It’s a fantastic way to engage the kids in problem-solving and adventure.
2. Build a Fort
Use cushions, blankets, and furniture to build an imaginative fort or castle. It’s an excellent way for kids to get creative and have a little adventure indoors.
3. Family Story Time
Gather around with some books and have a story-telling session. Each family member can take turns reading a story or even creating one on the spot. Or, if you’re brave enough, why not make up some ghost stories of your own and even leave them for the next guests to read.
4. Cooking Together
Involve the kids in cooking a meal or baking a simple recipe. It’s a fun and educational activity that also helps in teaching them basic cooking skills.
5. DIY Craft Session
Get creative with crafts. Use recycled materials like toilet paper rolls, old newspapers, and boxes to create art. It could be anything from making simple masks to building model houses.
6. Indoor Obstacle Course
Create a fun obstacle course in the living room using cushions, chairs, and blankets. It’s great for keeping the kids physically active and can be modified for different age groups.
7. Home Theatre
Put on a play or a puppet show. Kids can create their scripts, make puppets out of socks or paper bags, and put on a performance for the family.
8. Board Games and Puzzles
Engage in classic board games or puzzles. They are perfect for family bonding and also help in developing strategic thinking and problem-solving skills in children.
9. Yoga and Exercise
Lead a family yoga or exercise session. It’s a healthy way to stay active indoors and can be a fun and relaxing experience for everyone.
10. Create Your Own Board Game
Encourage the kids to design their own board game using cardboard, markers, and any small objects that can serve as game pieces. They can create rules, objectives, and even design the board themselves.
11. Karaoke Contest
If you have access to a karaoke machine or just a device to play music, hold a family karaoke contest. It’s a great way to have fun and enjoy some music together.
12. Fun Family Photo Album
Find ways to create funny and/or creative photos from your holiday around the house and have a competition for who comes up with the best idea. You could even post them on social media or send them to family like a digital postcard.
13. Origami Fun
Using a YouTube tutorial, teach the kids origami with paper available at home. Start with simple shapes like boats and planes, then move on to more complex figures as they get the hang of it.
14. Write and Illustrate a Family Storybook
Collaborate to create a story, with each family member contributing a part. Illustrate the story with drawings or cut-outs from magazines.
15. Fashion Show
Have a mini fashion show at home. Let the kids dress up in different outfits and walk down an imaginary runway. You can even make accessories or costumes out of recycled materials.
